Whittier - Hollis Burton Cole, 97, of the Union Hill community of Whittier, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 23, 2004, in a Jackson County hospital.

A native of Swain county, he was the son of the late Dan and Cora Lee Blankenship Cole. He was born in the Big Cove section of Swain County on June 2, 1906. He was a logger, construction worker and farmer. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in World War II. He married Gertrude Beatrice Martin in 1927 and she died in 1987. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Lucille Cole Bryson and a son who died at birth.

He is survived by two daughters, Mable L. Cole of the home and Ruby "Bobbie" Lee Cole Painter of Thomasville; brother, Willis Cole of Linville Falls; sister, Velma Roper of Baltimore; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Patterson Chapel Baptist Church. The Revs. Ray Lambert and Perry Cole will officiate. Burial will be in Union Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Crisp Funeral Home in Bryson City, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minute prior to the service.
