Published in The Sierra Vista Herald (August 3, 2016):

Beloved father and grandfather passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on June 28, 2016, with his family by his side at the Veterans Hospital in Tucson, Arizona.

He was born on August 26, 1921, in Bisbee, Arizona, and was preceded in death by his parents, John and Concepcion Smith, and his younger brother, Arthur Smith. Although he had resided in Tucson for the last several years, he was a lifelong resident of Bisbee.

He served in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman 1st Class on the destroyer U.S.S. Barker and was a proud veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his two daughters from his first marriage to Marianne -- Ginger Hill and Sharon Percival of San Diego, California; three grandsons, Larry Hill (California), Will Hill (Colorado), and Royce Hill (deceased); 6 great-grandchildren, Kamara, Trey, Mike, Tanya, Kodi, and Elijah; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his loving wife of 45 years, Francisca, in 2009; and is survived by daughter, Annie Herrera (Vince); and 3 grandchildren, Johnny Dorame, and Vincie and Alicia Herrera.

As a young man Henry started out working underground for the mines at Phelps Dodge, and subsequently became a journeyman welder. For most of his life he lived and worked in Bisbee, but when PD closed down its Lavender Pit mining operations in Bisbee, he moved to Ajo, Arizona, where he continued to work as a welder for PD until his retirement. He and Francisca then moved back to their home in Bisbee.

Henry was a good, kind-hearted man, a loving father and grandpa who enjoyed living in the small town in which he was born, and enjoyed sharing its history with others. He loved his country. He was humble, gene, rous but frugal, and hard-working. He was a man of few words with a quiet, stubborn determination, and always willing to help others. He was a man of routine, a man of lists. He loved his family, and they knew it. He also loved his dogs, watching baseball on TV, The Price is Right, Rachael Ray, the local news and western movies. His laughter and smile touched our hearts. He was well loved by his family. Daddy/Grandpa, we’ll miss you dearly each and every day.

A funeral Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of Henry’s life will be held Saturday, August 6, at 9:00 AM at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Bisbee, with military honors at the church, to be immediately followed by a reception at the parish hall. He will be reunited with his mother, father, and brother at a private interment at Evergreen Cemetery.
