Richard Neil (Dick) Steed was born June 16, 1927, in Norman, Oklahoma, to Thomas Jefferson Steed and Hazel Bennett Steed and he died on March 7, 2015. At the age of six months, his family moved to Shawnee. He lived there until age 17 when he joined the Navy (achieving the rank of Quarter Master) and served during World War II. His next adventure was working in his father’s Congressional office in Washington, DC, while making plans to prepare for a career in law. After completing pre-law at OBU, Dick returned to Norman to attend OU Law School. While in law school, he was named a member of Order of the Coif. In 1952, he graduated with the highest grade point ever made at that time.
Dick then returned to Shawnee to open his own law office where he practiced until 1989. He then served as General Counsel for Empire Funding Corporation of Texas from 1989-2005. He was proud to be a member of the Oklahoma, Colorado, and Texas Bar Associations.
Dick Steed married Jona Kay Low Smith in 1992. They lived in Houston and then Austin, Texas. When they retired, they moved to Ajijic, Chapala, Mexico.
They returned to Norman in 2007. Dick worked hard and played hard. He loved OU sports, skiing (skiing his last run in 2013), scuba diving, sailing in the British Virgin Islands, and golf. He especially enjoyed sharing these activities with family and friends.
Dick was predeceased by his parents, brother Roger Steed, and son-in-law Robert K. Hoffman. He is survived by the love of his life, Jona Kay Low Steed of Norman, and his children Roger Neil Steed (Jean) of Birmingham, Michigan; Katherine Vander Woude (Rick) of Evergreen, Colorado; and Marguerite Steed Hoffman of Dallas, Texas; stepsons Dr. Craig S. Smith (Julie Knox) of Gainesville, Florida, and Justin Low Smith (Kelly) of New Orleans, Louisiana. Dick was the proud grandfather of eight girls! Kelly, Rachel, and Sarah Steed of Birmingham, Michigan; Kate Hoffman of Dallas, Texas; Emma and Grace Vander Woude, of Evergreen, Colorado; and Sloan and Allison Smith of New Orleans, Louisiana; and his three dogs, Jill, Fred, and Jack.
