Melvina Jane Russell Aschbacher was born Dec. 8, 1911, in Stonewall, Okla., to the home of Sara Ella and Henry B. Morin. She passed from this life Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006, at Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales, at the age of 94 years, 11 months and 11 days.
Melvina grew up in Frisco, Okla., where she attended school. On March 3, 1934, in Stonewall, Okla., she was married to Ezra Russell. They lived in Floyd, N.M. for a time before moving to California in 1941. While living in California, she worked as a sales lady for Sears. In 1962, they moved back to New Mexico to take over the Russell farm and dairy southwest of Floyd. Melvina also worked part-time for JC Penney and Turner's, and she and her husband served as houseparents for the N.M. Baptist Children's Home. Ezra predeceased her in 1991. On Oct. 24, 1992, in Portales, she was married to Joe Aschbacher. Joe predeceased her in 2002. She was a lifelong member of the Baptist Church and enjoyed crocheting and working in her yard. Throughout her life, she was a devoted homemaker and loved spending time with her family.
Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bruce and Beverly Russell and Lane Russell, all of Buckeye, Ariz.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Orville Stienes of Bellevue, Iowa and Linda and Harlin Stobb, of Portales; a step-son, Joe Henry (and Pat) Aschbacher, of McAllen, Texas; a step-daughter, Goldie (and Ray) Bradshaw, of Carlsbad; 26 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; seven brothers, Matthew, Earl, Corbett, Henry, Coley, Leonard and Buck Morin; three sisters, Vera Griffin, Vada Devolld, and Sybil Tinnen; four grandchildren, Rodney Bennett, Jace Bennett, Vallie Ann Bennett and Rusty Brown; two daughters, Bobbie Jean McLaughlin and Lee Ella Bennett; and by her first and second husbands.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006, at 2:00 P.M., in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Walter Huber will officiate. Pallbearers will be Jim Dockter, Larry Dockter, Harlin G. Stobb, Cary Russell, Chuck Essary and Bobby Essary.
Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery.
