Solomon was the son of Roswell Powers and Lucy Ruggs Powers. He married Anna Rebecca Salsgiver on June 28, 1868 in Benzie Co., MI. They had at least 7 children: Grace, Roswell, Laura, Cora, Herbert, Effie and Oscar.

Solomon was called "Saul" by friends. He was a farmer and spent his adult life raising his children in Benzie county, MI.

Solomon enlisted as a Private (at age 25) to Co. Batty B, 1st Light Artillery Reg. in a Michigan Regiment - serving in the Civil War. He mustered out of the same unit in June 14, 1865 at Detroit, MI (along with his brother, Levi).

In July 1872 Solomon purchased 160 acres of land on the 1862 Homestead Treaty Act (registered the land in Traverse City, MI).
