John Edward "Ed" Fisher of Grove City passed on to his eternal home Tuesday morning, July 19, 2016, while under hospice care at Grove City Medical Center, Pine Township. He was 93.
Ed was born in Walhonding, Ohio, to Clarence and Mary Fisher in 1922. He resided in Ohio until the outbreak of World War II, when he entered into military service. He served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant in the anti-tank unit with the 16th regiment of the 1st Division. His service included battles and campaigns in North Africa, Sicily, the invasion at Normandy, Central Europe and the Battle of the Bulge. He received seven Bronze Stars and was also presented the Jubilee of Liberty medal from the government of France for his participation in the landing at Omaha Beach on D-Day.
Following his military service, Ed married Violette "Vi" Swatik on Jan. 31, 1948, in Mount Vernon, Ohio. Together they raised four children. They moved to Grove City in 1968 when Ed was transferred from the Cooper-Bessemer Corp. in Mount Vernon to the plant in Grove City. He retired as a tool designer from Cooper Energy Services in January 1985 after working for the company for 44 years.
Mr. Fisher was an active member of the community, having served on Grove City Borough Council and the Cooper Bessemer Credit Union Board.
He was a faithful member of East Main Presbyterian Church for more than 40 years.
Ed enjoyed trailer camping with his family and after retirement he and Vi traveled extensively including all 50 states.
Ed had a deep sense of respect for family and for his personal history. He took his grown children to the remote sites in Ohio where his ancestors had settled and always made a point to keep in touch and visit his relatives.
