Viella Blue was born February 14, 1877 near Aledo, Illinois, the youngest of seven children born to David and Mary Ellen Blue. David was a self-made farmer and businessman who was orphaned at the age of seven in Pennsylvania, raised by older siblings and came west to Illinois at the age of 14. He married Mary Ellen Guffy in 1858. In 1881 the family sold its Illinois land and moved to Perry, Iowa when Viella was four years old. In Perry they lived in town which is where she grew up and received her schooling. Her father David owned and operated several farms in the area and ran a livery stables for awhile. He also served on the city council for several terms and helped to found the First National Bank of Perry. Viella tragically died at the age of 19, in 1896. She had never married. She is buried next to her parents at the Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry.
