Al was born to the late Laton Yates Horton and Blanch Brittain Horton McNeilly on July 23, 1925 in Cleveland County.
Al served his country honorably in the Navy during World War II and was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Vincennes as a Firecontrol Operator Second Class.
He became a member of Calvary Baptist Church at the age of 10, and later taught Sunday school there for many years.
Al loved playing golf and fishing with his friends. Farming was also a joy for him, especially sharing his produce with others. Al graduated from Western Carolina Teacher's College with a B.S. degree in education and from Appalachian State University where he earned a Master's degree in education and an Advanced Principal's degree. He taught in Forsyth and Buncombe counties before moving back to Burke County. Al was a teacher and principal for 42 years.
Along with his parents, Al is preceded in death by his stepfather, W. Roy McNeilly; two brothers, Harold Lee Horton and W. Clifton Horton; and two stepbrothers, Phillip McNeilly McNeilly and Herbert McNeilly.
The family suggests memorials be made to the public school of one's choice in honor of Al.
