Lucile was born on January 2, 1908 in Des Moines. She attended St. Joseph Academy, and graduated from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, IN, in 1929. She was a homemaker and with her husband, Edward (Pat) Haley, she raised five children. Lu was an artist all her life, and created many paintings and needlework pieces, several of which won awards at the Iowa State Fair. In later years, she was known for her needlepoint pictures. For several years, she was the crafts chairperson of the annual Bishop Drumm Care Center Bazaar. Lu was a member of St. Augustin Catholic Church in Des Moines. For the past four years, she has resided at Martina Place in Johnston.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Edward R. (Pat) Haley; infant son, Tomas Edward Haley; her parents, Joseph and Catherine Muelhaupt; and several brothers and sisters, Alice E. Marxer (Carl), Joseph W. Muelhaupt (Mary), Edward C. Muelhaupt (Dorothy), Harry Muelhaupt (Naomi), Catherine Cummins (Frank), Florence Marxer (Hugo), Carl Muelhaupt (Erna) and Louis Muelhaupt.
Lu is survived by daughter, Sister Mary Pat Haley, BVM, of Chicago, IL; daughter, Judy Haley Giesen and her husband Jim of Dubuque; daughter, Eileen Schellhammer and her husband, Jim of Bloomington, IN; daughter, Janet Nissly and her husband Harold of Johnston; her son, Michael Haley and his wife Nancy, of St. Paul, MN; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
