Sometime between the 1860 and 1870 census both Mary and Ranson died. Lula was taken in by Nehemiah and Mary (Boyce) Cole before the 1870 census. Nehemiah was a cousin of Mary (Cole) Caswell. By 1880 they had adopted his nephew Eldon Maguire, because they had no children. Lula was raised with Eldon until her marriage in 1881. She even named her son Eldon. In the 1900 census after Lula's divorce her son Eldon Robert Gillander was also living with Nehemiah Cole.
