W. J. Galt, a native of the Traer community who has lived most of his life in Des Moines, died at the Methodist hospital in Des Moines of a heart attack Monday, April 15. He passed his 100th birthdate November 10, 1967, at his home. He had broken his hip last week. Mr. Galt was the son of David Galt, an early settler of the Traer community, and Janette L. Bovee. His mother died in 1868 when he was a 9-month-old infant, and he was reared here by Mr. and Mrs. John Galt, his grandparents. He attended a business college in Des Moines. He took employment at the Eagle Iron Works in Des Moines and worked for the same firm until his retirement at the age of 73. He was not eager to retire then but had suffered a heart attack and was not able to work for some time. Eventually he recovered and had since been in good health except for some hearing impairment.
Mr. Galt was married to Mary McBride in 1895. They were the parents of two daughters They are Mrs. Eugene E. Fields and Mrs. R. E. Larson, both of Waterloo. There is one grandson. W. J. Galt's father, David, remarried in 1869 to Mary McCormick, and they were the parents of two sons and four daughters. Jean Galt of Washington, D. C., a retired employee of the U. S. Veterans administration, is the only living child by his second marriage. The deceased sons were James Neil and Archibald David; the daughters who have died were Mrs. Fred E. (Grace) Ward, Mrs. W. G. (Esma) McCornack and Mrs. John (Flora) Sloane.
