Earl was the son of Richard and Madilla "Dilla" McNeal Graham with siblings: Elsie Elizabeth, Clement Ray, Richard McNeal, Chester Dean, and Carl A. He had an eighth grade education and was a die maker. Earl married Ruby Ada Coulder, and she died in 1923 of tuberculosis. They had children: Richard and Virginia. Virginia died at age 21 from strep throat. Earl was tall and slender with blue eyes and black hair. He was a sergeant in the Ohio National Guard for three years.
