Thomas W was on the 1860 census living with his parents at Division, Hill County, TX. After the death of their parents, Thomas W and his brother, Reuben B were living with their Uncle and Aunt Martha Ann Elizabeth YATES Shelton as shown on the 1870 census.

He married Flora Fetty on December 06, 1887 in Lamar County, TX. They had four daughters, Golden Alberta YATES Adams, Nina, Inez F, Anna E, and three sons, Thomas Washington 'Tom'Jr, Arthur Bland, & Charles Parker Yates.

It is rumored that he with his brothers, Charles & Jasper were sent out west to work on a ranch. They ran away when Charles was about 16 because they were expected to do the work of a grown man. Charles W and Jasper J are found on the 1870 census living with their uncle, James Tilton and his wife, along with their grandmother, Avis T. Yates. He probably died about 1909.
