William Ellery, s. of Capt. John Ellery and Mary Austin, b. May 8, 1740 at Hartford, Conn. where he d. Aug. 27, 1812, Æ 73 (g.s.). He was a merchant on a large-scale at Hartford, before and after the Revolutionary War, and in 1776 his "Great Store" was on the bank of the Connecticut River, near the foot of the present Potter Street. He was appointed postmaster of Hartford by Franklin in 1775, but had held the office for the previous seven or eight years. He was thrice married.

On Nov. 26, 1761 at New Hartford, Conn., William m. 1) Susannah Keith, dau. of Capt. William Keith (dec'd) and Marianne Lawrence, b. at Hartford where she was bp. Jan. 12, 1739/40 at the Hartford 1st Church. She d. June 22, 1768 at New Hartford, Conn. while visting her mother and step-father, Rev. Jonathan Marsh. They had three children b. at Hartford:

• i. Mary Ellery, b. June 15, 1762, d. unmarried at Hartford Aug. 21, 1781.

• ii. Susannah Ellery, b. Oct. 25, 1763; m. 1) Edward Blagg of New York City, and 2) Dr. Joseph Edwards.

• iii. Jane Ellery, b. Apr. 24, 1764, d. Oct. 12, 1851; m. June 19, 1804, Maj. Henry Seymour of Hartford, s. of the Hon. Thomas Seymour and Mary Ledyard, who d. at Hartford May 13, 1846. They were the parents of Col. Thomas H. Seymour, Gov. of Conn. and U.S. Minister to Russia.

Before 1773, William m. 2) Experience Ledyard, youngest child of John Ledyard and his 1st wife Deborah Youngs, bp. Apr. 5, 1747 at Groton, Conn. She d. in childbed Mar. 5, 1773 at Hartford, Æ 26 (g.s.) She was buried two days later while her unnamed child, likely still-born, was buried the same day that she died.

On an unrecorded date, William m. 3) Hannah Marsh, the youngest child of Rev. Jonathan Marsh and Marianne Lawrence, latter also the mother of Williams' first wife Susannah Keith. She was b. Mar. 18, 1761 at New Hartford, Conn. and at their marriage she was the apparent widow of Caleb Watson of New Hartford. There are no known children of this 3rd marriage, with Hannah surviving her husband and dying at Hartford on Jan. 15, 1838, Æ 77.
