Joseph served for thirty five months in the Army of the Cumberland. He is a member of G.A.R., a Republican, a stockholder in the Humboldt bank, and school director for 20 years, and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He owned a farm and farmed in Humboldt, Illinois.

Joseph is the son of Elisha and Mary Green Newby (of North Carolina). He received his education in the schools of Indiana. (He has a brother named Elijah Newby, h/o Margaret Bane, living close at Seven Hickory Township.)
