Louis was the Son of Henry Shaffer and Barbara Full Shaffer.

He married Melly Newby Wilson, on March 5, 1875 in Spring Dale, Leavenworth County, Kansas. He was a railroad man and so they moved after their two children were born there in Spring Dale.

Louis was the Father of Edgar Thomas Schaeffer and Florence Jane Schaeffer Wilson Gruber.

Louis served as a Private in Company F, 7th US Army Cavalry. He Enlisted 11 Aug 1866 in Hagerstown Maryland and Discharged 11 Aug 1871 ( 5 years ). During this time the 7th fought in the Indians Wars and was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas.

The family had been in Cheyenne just four years while Louis worked as a coach builder in the U.P. shops. During this time Mellie took ill for months and she died of cancer there at 5:05 o'clock in the afternoon of August 21, 1905 at their home at 2018 Fergurson Street. They had a funeral service there the next day which was attended by a large number of friends and the members of the American Order of Protection, who escorted the remains to the depot, from whence they were shipped to Lawrence, Kan., for interment on that afternoon train. Her body was sent back for burial, here in Oak Hill Cemetery. Those attending her body home were, Louis Schaeffer, her son, Edgar T. Schaeffer, Mr. and Mrs. W.O. Wilson, Mrs. Cox and Orville Carey.

Louis was probably a member of the Methodist Church and during his residence in Cheyenne as was his wife.

He passed away at the Wadsworth Old Soldiers Home in Leavenworth, Kansas.

At the time of his passing Great Grandpa Louis left behind: his son Edgar, his daughter Florence Wilson Gruber, and six grandsons Merritt H. Wilson, Everett H. Wilson, Harvey N. Gruber, Louis H. Schaeffer, Thomas E. Schaeffer and James Arthur Schaeffer. And one Grandchild, Patricia M. Wilson.
