After Dom's death Mary traveled to France in the 1930s and worked as a journalist. She would later move to New York city where she again worked as a writer and editor of various publications.
In 1940 she married her second husband Joachim Peter Rotolo. They had two children Carla Maria and Susan Elizabeth.
Pete died in 1958 and she married again in 1962 to Dr. Fred Bowes. She and Fred retired to Sardinia and lived there until 1990 when she came back to the States for health reasons. She briefly stayed with her sister Josephine before being hospitalized.
Although cremated, her name was added to her parent's gravestone in St. Michael's Cemetery in Boston.
