"Mrs. Ella Catherine Mitchell (nee: Govrereau), died at her home in East Bonne Terre, December 21, 1903, after an illness of five days duration, aged 37 years, having lived in Bonne Terre most all her life where she has many relatives and friends to mourn her sad departure; being of a very quiet, kind disposition, always trying to make those about her happy and many will remember the kind hospitality received at her hands. Everything was done for her that could be done by a kind husband and loving brothers and sisters, but God had called and we could not keep her longer.

She professed a hope in Christ and united with the Baptist Church when but 16 years of age and lived in faithful obedience to God up to the time of her death. She suffered the most intense and excruciating pain throughout her entire illness, all of which she bore with that christian fortitude characteristic of all God-loving people. The scene at her death bed will never be forgotten by those present--calling her husband and children about her, kissing them a last good-bye, requesting them to live religious and meet her in heaven, and giving them advice such as only a loving mother could give. The scene was not less touching when the poor old mother, bent with the weight of many years, feebly approached the bed to bid her daughter a last farewell.

Our heart goes out in sympathy for these bereaved ones, and especially the heartbroken husband who has lost his dear companion. May God help him to bear his loss with humble submission. Our loss seems hard, oh, so very hard, but let us not weep for her as those who have no hope, for we feel assured by her dying testimony that she is at rest in heaven.

Our sister leaves a husband and 8 children, the youngest a tender little babe of ten months. May God protect them from the evils of this world and finally save them with their mother where the(y) never say good-bye.

Funeral services were conducted by Brother Marion Huse at the Little Vine church, after which all that was mortal of this good mother was laid at rest in the church cemetery."

Ella Catherine Govreau Mitchell was the daughter of Joseph Henry Govreau (1829-1877) and Cassander Vandever. She married William F. Mitchell February 17, 1884 in St. Francois Co., Mo. They had 9 children; Harry I., Charles A., Bertha S., Myrtle May, John F., John Lawrence, Frank B., Buford Orville, and Marnie.
