Humphrey was the first of five known children born to Thomas of Woodstock and Lady Eleanor de Bohun. He was a member of the House of Plantagenet and a grandson of King Edward III.
Humphrey's siblings, sometimes shown with the surname, "Plantagenet" or "of Woodstock" or "of Gloucester", depending on the source, were Anne (1383-1428), Joan (1384-1400), Isabella (1386-1402) and Philippa (abt. 1388, died young).
After his father was murdered in 1397, presumably upon orders by King Richard II, his father's nephew, Humphrey became a ward of the crown, along with Henry of Monmouth (future Henry V), son of Henry Bolingbroke (Henry IV). King Richard took both boys with him to Ireland where they were held hostage.
After Bolingbroke deposed King Richard, the boys were ordered released, but Humphrey died from the plague on the way home. His grief-stricken mother died shortly thereafter.
Humphrey was buried in Walden Abbey.
