A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 AM Saturday July 9, 2016 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Monroe City. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Holy Rosary Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 PM Friday at Yager-Kendrick Funeral Home in Monroe City. A rosary will be recited at 4:45 PM Monday and a scripture service will be held at 7:30 PM at the funeral home.

Don was born on June 23, 1938 in Marion County, Missouri, the son of Clifford Robert and Alice Josephine (Jarboe) Gander. Don was raised on a farm in rural Monroe City, graduating from Holy Rosary High School. Before Don enlisted in the United States Air Force, he worked at McDonell-Douglas in St. Louis. While serving his country, Don was stationed overseas and spent time in Germany, Thailand, Vietnam, Spain, Okinawa, Philippines, and Greece. Don retired from the Air Force as a Senior Master Sergeant in 1979 after serving 23 years. During his military career, Don worked in missiles and on the B-52 bombers. Don was awarded many honors including the Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Medal for 16 combat missions over Vietnam, and the National Defense Service Medal. While serving in the Air Force, Don earned his bachelor degree.

After Don’s retirement from the Air Force he worked at Diemakers in Monroe City before again retiring to continue his family’s tradition of farming at the home place. Due to health reasons, Don retired completely in 2013.

He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus - a Fourth Degree Member, the Monroe City VFW Post # 4240, the American Legion Boots-Dickson Post 174 in Palmyra, and the Young Farmers. Don was a man of great faith and integrity. He was always kind, gentle and patient. Don was a true family man who was always there to help out and could fix anything. He adored his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved spending time with his family.

On December 27, 1958, Donald married Elizabeth Ketsenburg at Holy Rosary Church in Monroe City, and she preceded him in death on March 25, 2016.

Don is survived by his children, Maria (Larry) Bradshaw of Kirksville, Teresa (Russell) Hettinger of Philadelphia, and Michael (Joni) Gander of Aledo, IL; grandchildren, Cathy Jo (David) Pfaff of Monroe City, Kristopher (Brandi) Gander of Excelsior Springs, MO, Janelle (Mathew) Stephens of Kirksville, Leah (Joe) Hirner of Rock Port, MO, Chelsea (Zane Mueting) Gander of Colona, IL, Drake (Audrey Robinson) Bradshaw of Milan, Reann (Tyler) Redd of Palmyra, Risa Jo Hettinger, and Lance Hettinger of Philadelphia; great-grandchildren, Connor Pfaff and Taylor Pfaff of Monroe City, Madison Kellett of Colona, IL, Cora Hirner of Rock Port, J.J.
