William Henry Gilliard, born on February 1, 1840 in Barnwell District, SC. At the outbreak of the War, Mr. Gilliard enlisted as a Private on April 19, 1862 in Gordon's Co. GA 1st Infantry. On May 5, 1862 he transferred into B Co. GA 13th Battalion Infantry and then on December 23, 1862 he transferred into Co." K" of GA 63rd Infantry. Pension records state he was paroled on May 21, 1865 with his command in Thomasville, GA.


William Henry Gilliard was first married about 1862 to Nancy Music, daughter of William and Martha "Polly" Music. They had six sons. After her death he married Penelope "Penny" Bagley, daughter of William Bagley and Jane Davis Bagley. They had five children – three sons and two daughters. All the Gilliard children were born in Ware Co. leading to the belief that William Gilliard chose to settle in Ware Co. as soon as the War was over.
