Ben served as a Machinist U.S. Navy during World War II.

Ben was a passenger on Navy Aircraft R4D-5 #39090 and was first declared "Missing In Action" and his status, after finding the aircraft, was later changed to "Killed In Action"

R4D-5 #39090 took off from Mareeba Airfield on a flight to Cairns Airfield then took off again on a flight bound for Momote Airfield on Los Negros Island. The plane never reached Momote Airfield and was declared missing during the war.

The aircraft was discovered in 1970 and had crashed into Mount Scratchley in the vicinity of Mount Victoria and his remains were interred here.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
