FORT WORTH - William Ross Wimbish , a former superintendent of the Arlington public schools, died Thursday at a retirement community in Fort Worth. He was 85.

Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Hugh M. Moore & Sons Funeral Home in Arlington.

Burial will be in Moore Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Wimbish was born in Hubbard and had lived in Fort Worth since 1960. He had previously lived in Arlington.

He received a bachelor of science degree from Abilene Christian University in 1930 and a master's degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1936. He did graduate work at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

He spent 30 years as an educator before his retirement in 1955 and was also a superintendent of the Forreston public schools and director of school building and planning services for Lubbock public schools.

After his retirement, he was vice president of the National Educators' Life Insurance Co. and United Fidelity Life Insurance Co. during the 1960s and 1970s.

Mr. Wimbish helped to guide the Arlington public schools through its initial period of rapid growth, and an Arlington elementary school was named in his honor in recognition of his accomplishments.

He received numerous honors during his lifetime, including the Paul Harris Fellowship, which was recently awarded to him by the Arlington Rotary Club.He was a former member of the First United Methodist Church in Arlington and a member of Meadowbrook United Methodist Church in Fort Worth.

He served on many church committees in Lubbock, Arlington and Fort Worth.

His wife of 54 years, Kittie Ruth Matthews Wimbish , died in 1987.

Survivors: Daughter, Judy Ruth Wimbish Williamson of New Mexico; sister, Minnie Lee Beasley of Fort Worth; and two grandchildren.
