DIED, at Newtown, L.I., on the 7th inst., Mrs. Elizabeth Harper, consort of Joseph Harper, in the 74th year of her age. This venerable lady was the mother of the well know brothers Harper, publishers of this city, the eldest of whom has so recently been the city's chief magistrate. She was eminent for her Christian character, and had been a member of the M.E. Church for more than half a century, having embraced religion under the ministry of "Father Abbott", one of the pioneers of that denomination, more than 53 years since. During the whole of that time she exhibited a uniform and consistent piety, characterized by intelligence, humility and a fervent spirit, and adorning her profession by the practical fruits of benevolence and usefulness to the bodies and the souls of her neighbors, by whom she was regarded as truly a mother in Israel. In her death, she was Divinely favored with abounding consolation, and rejoiced in her last hours with the assurance of a blessed immortality. Her funeral was attended by her numerous relatives and friends, who crowded to the village church to pay their last sad tribute of respect to the memory of one who was so universally esteemed. The services were appropriately conducted by her pastor, the Rev. Mr. Stout, and the Rev. Edward T. Taylor, of Boston, the latter of whom made a most pathetic and appropriate application of the solemn occasion, especially adapted to the large circle of bereaved relatives, among whom might be seen the venerable husband, to whom she has been united for 54 years, her four sons, and their numerous families. "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints."

NOTES:

1) Elizabeth was buried in the church yard of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Newtown in Middle Village, Queens, Long Island. Her name and death date appears on a list of burials (a list featuring mostly members of the Morrell family) that was included in correspondence (likely) from the M.E. Church minister Charles Bell to J.B. Morrell in the 1920s (image and notes available from user '1_nluck' on ancestry.com, brief M.E. Church of Newtown history found in an Apr 2005 article on forgotten-ny.com)

2) Elizabeth was the daughter of Jacobus Kolyer (1749-1819) and Jane Miller, and wife of Joseph Henry Harper (1750-1838)

3) while the above obit mentions her husband being alive at the time of her death, another source states he died in 1838
