Frank signed up with the National Guard while attending the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1938. Three years later, when the US entered World War II he enlisted as an infantryman in the Army. He was assigned to duty at Molokai, Hawaii and then graduated from OCS before reporting for the Normandy Invasion. Following D-Day Frank was assigned to the 3rd Army under General Patton. He was seriously wounded while a Reconnaissance Officer in France as spent 8 months in traction in a hospital in England. For the rest of the war he was a rehabilitation officer. He retired with 28 years of service after also taking part in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts.
