Coatsburg, Jan. 6—John L. Grigsby Sr., of Coatsburg died Sunday morning at 4 o'clock in Chicago, aged 76 years. He had gone to Chicago to a sanitarium for treatment about three weeks ago. But nothing could be done to aid him and death came peacefully yesterday morning. About two years ago he suffered a stroke of apoplexy, and since that time had never regained his health, growing gradually worse, until as a last resort he was sent to Chicago for treatment. Mr. Grigsby was born 5 June 1836, in Pace country. Virginia. In the fall of the same year the family moved to Fall Creek township, where they lived until 1847, when they moved to Honey Greek township. In 1859 Mr. Grigsby decided to go west, and started out on foot, traveling over 1700 mines, finally settling in California where he worked in the mines until the outbreak of the civil war. He enlisted in the 4th regiment of California Infantry. Co G. and served until the close of the war. He embarked on the steamer Golden City toward the close of the year 1865, and sailing via the Isthmus of Panama, landed in New York in January of 1865, going from there to his Coatsburg home, arriving here January. In 1869 he was married to Miss Sarah Murrah, who preceded him in death. Mr. Grigsby has long been identified with the business and social life of Coatsburg, and of Adams county. He was for years a stock shipper and produce merchant here, and ran the mills for many years. Since the year 1897 he has spent his winters in San Jose, Calif., and has made his home while in Coatsburg with his son John L. Grigsby Jr. For over a third of a century he was a member of the Masonic fraternity and is known throughout the county, where he has made a name for himself for absolute integrity and square dealing. He leaves two children. Grace D. Grigsby of San Jose. Calif. and John L. Jr., of this town. There are also four sisters, Mrs Mary Kirkpatrick of Los Angeles. Mrs. James Guymon of Hutchison, Kansas, Mrs. Emma Phirman of Quincy and Mrs. Lizzie Odear. living in Missouri. By a curious coincidence, on Saturday at midnight, just a few hours before the death of Mr. Grigsby, a son was born to the son John Grigsby, Jr. The date of the funeral has not yet been determined, but it will probably not be held before Sunday.
