Barbara Kay Aalderks, age 77, of Kesley, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 29, 2016, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center.

Barbara ‘Barb’ Kay Aalderks, age 77, of Kesley, Iowa, was born the daughter of Ben and Gertrude (Ruehaak) DeBerg on November 13, 1938, in Kesley, Iowa. On November 20, 1939, Barb was baptized at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison and graduated from Aplington High School in 1956. After graduation, Barb attended Iowa Teaching College for one year. From 1959 to 1962, Barb worked at the Iowa State Bank.
On June 7, 1958, Barb was united in marriage with Andrew ‘Andy’ Leonard Aalderks at the Kesley Presbyterian Church. They made their home in Kesley for five years. For the next 30 years, Andy and Barb lived on the Aalderks family farm near Parkersburg. After leaving the farm, they moved back to Kesley. Barb was employed at Kesley Grocery, Kesley Creamery Coop and Kesley Lumber from 1990 to 2012.
Barb was a member of the Kesley Presbyterian Church in Kesley. Barb played piano for over 50 years, taught Sunday School, was a member of Presbyterian Women, was church treasurer many years and was a member of AMVETS Auxiliary. Barb was well known for her red velvet cake, and bunny cakes were a family favorite, especially with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed playing Rummy and card games with her grandchildren. Barb’s favorite times were family Christmas and getting together for Specken Dicken at New Years.
Barb passed away Wednesday, June 29, 2016, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center from pancreatic cancer. Barb is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Andrew on May 24, 2016, and her parents.
Barb is survived one daughter, Connie (Jay) Mennenga of Wellsburg; one son, Curt (Melanie) Aalderks of Cedar Falls; five grandchildren: Trent (Katie) Mennenga, Scott (Maria) Mennenga, Zachary Mennenga, Zach (fiancé, Brittany Ecklund) Severson, Natalie (fiancée, Nick Garcia) Severson; seven great-grandchildren: Teagan, Blake, Charlotte and Wesley Mennenga, Lauren and Jack Severson, and Kaius Garcia; and one sister, Beverly Hempen of Aplington.
Funeral will be 10:30, Saturday, July 2, 2016, at Bethel Reformed Church with burial at Bethel Reformed Church Cemetery, both in rural Aplington, Iowa.
Visitation will be 5-8, Friday at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington.
