From Marysville Journal-Tribune, Marysville, Ohio on Monday, May 24, 1943, Page 1 and 2.

All Marysville was shocked when the notice was received yesterday of the death in China of First Lieutenant Chester Donald Griffin, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dana B. Griffin, and noted fighter pilot with three confirmed enemy planes to his credit.

The telegram received from the war department stated that the death of Lieut. Griffin was the result of an accident and that a letter giving details would follow later.

Lieut. Griffin was awarded the Air Medal recently for having distinguished himself by meritorious achievement in an aerial flight.

The death of Lieut. Griffin came after he had performed extensive duty, having been on combat duty for 10 months before he was relieved about six weeks ago for a short leave which he expected to spend in India. He had returned to combat duty some time ago.

Lieut. Griffin was known by his comrades as a daring pilot and was unusually popular with them as well as his superior officers. Enlisting in the army air corps, Lieut. Griffin started training in East St. Louis on April 30, 1941. He received advanced instruction at Randolph and Kelley Fields in Texas and was awarded his wings on Dec. 12, 1941.

The first assignment of Lieut. Griffin was to the Boston Air Patrol. A short time later, he was assigned to foreign service and on July 4, 1942, he started on combat duty in China. He was the last member of his flight squad, others having lost their lived or having been relieved for illness or other reasons.

Lieut. Griffin was born in Marysville on April 17, 1920. He graduated from Marysville High School in 1936. He was employed by the Kroger Grocery Company here for abut a year, later working at the H.B. Salter Manufacturing Company, until his enlistment. That he should fight for his country was natural, for his father, an employee of the Marysville Post Office, who is a veteran of World War I.

Lieut. Griffin was married while stationed at Boston on March 7, 1942 to Miss Dorothy Isabel Hall of San Antonio, Texas, whom he met while training in Texas. After leaving for overseas duty, his wife returned to her home in Texas.

In addition to his parents, Lieut. Griffin is survived by three brothers, Staff Sgt. Dana Ray Griffin of Eglin Field, FL, Pvt. Leo G. Griffin, a member of the US Marines and serving in the South Pacific, and William F. Griffin, a member of this year's graduating class of Marysville High School, who passed examinations and is awaiting the call to train as a naval air cadet. Two sisters, Kathleen and Myra, also survive him at home.
