Mary "May" Greeno was the daughter of Lewis W. Greeno and Sarah Avery. After her mother passed away in 1877, her father went to Colorado as part of the Colorado Gold Rush, leaving his children behind. In 1880, at the age of 10, May lived as a ward in the household of a Knox County family, while her older siblings were independent and her younger siblings were living with relatives. She remained in Knox County, IL and married Joseph B Armstrong at age 35. It was his second marriage.

May stayed close to her sister Florence Emma Greeno Miller, who presented her with an autograph/signature book in 1888. May's 1888 autograph book is in possession of Florence Greeno Miller's great-grandchildren. It contains the signatures of both May and Florence along with signatures of many of May's relatives and friends.

Census records indicate that May was born in 1870 versus the 1867 that is recorded on her headstone.
