Laurel Lee Funk Jannusch, 89, of rural Shirley, passed away shortly before midnight on June 21, 2016, at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center, Normal, Illinois.

Laurel was born Aug. 27, 1926 in Bloomington, the daughter of Lawrence Parker Funk and Adele Edwards Stephens Funk. She was the beloved wife of Eldon "Eldy" Jannusch. They were married on Dec. 18, 1949 at the Evangelical United Brethren Church, Bloomington. He preceded her in death in 2003.

She is survivewd by four children, Rick (Rey) Jannusch, Julie Jannusch (David McLane), Kara Klockenga (Rick Williams) and Randall (Jill) Jannusch; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and very special sister-in-law, Glaida Funk.

Her parents; her dear brother, Stephen "Steve" Funk; her twin sister, Rosemary Bennett and her half brother, Lawrence "Larry" Funk, also preceded her in death.

Laurel was the great-granddaughter of notable pioneer and Illinois state senator, the Hon. Isaac Funk. Laurel's mother, Adele, was a registered nurse, and from her Laurel developed an interest in nutrition and medicine.

When she was only four years old, Laurel tragically lost her father, Lawrence Funk, who had been a prominent farmer in Funks Grove, in an automobile accident. After surviving this loss and the challenges of the Great Depression, Laurel proceeded to overcome adversity and was proud to say she attended Evanston High School, Evanston. There, she proved to be a worthy scholar, excelling in Latin and French, which she used to influence her children academically and encourage their knowledge, especially with spelling and grammar.

Laurel worked hard as a farmer's wife and enjoyed raising her four children on the farm. Together, Eldy and Laurel began raising tomatoes for Campbell Soup Co. in 1965. They then ran Jannusch Produce and Jannusch Detasseling.

Laurel was a terrific mother and homemaker. She was always cooking, sewing, and helping with programs at Ben Funk Elementary School, where her children attended. She sacrificed selflessly throughout the years, putting her husband and children before herself. Laurel tirelessly drove her four children from Shirley to Normal for several years so they could attend University High School.

She also loved seeing her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and hearing about their activities and accomplishments. Many relatives, friends, and neighbors remember being invited to sit at her kitchen table for some interesting conversation and delicious food. Laurel was known for sharing her excellent cooking, and her grasp of farming, current events and politics.

Eldy and Laurel loved vacationing at Las Brisas Resort, Acapulco, Mexico, every year since 1974, sometimes celebrating their wedding anniversary there.
