John Slough Haney was born to Ebenezer Haney and Hannah Slough of Pelham. John grew up in Pelham among a large number of brothers and cousins. Sometime before 1845, his mother died, and his father remarried. His father received lands as a Talbot Settler and the family moved to Elgin. Some of those lands passed to John when his father and step-mother moved to Clinton County, Iowa.

John and Phoebe Chambers married 12 December 1851, she being the daughter of Isaac Chambers. The couple faced many struggles and hardships, but they loved each other through it all and had a large family of at least 17 children.

John was devastated by Phoebe's death in 1900. He stayed for a time with his son Isaac Ebenezer Haney. As John's health deteriorated, he removed to a facility in Southwold. There he died in 1911, and his remains were remitted to the family plot in Straffordville.
