EDWARD CHARLES GUTHMANN
Edward C. Guthmann, 88, a former auto-repair garage operator in Grand Island, died Monday at Omaha. He had been in failing health for many months. He was a resident in St. Vincent's Home at Omaha.

Funeral services will be 9:30 A.M. Friday in St. Mary's Cathedral when requiem mass will be offered. Interment will be in Grand Island Cemetery. The rosary will be recited at 7:30 P.M. Thursday in the Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home Chapel. Friends may call Thursday evening until 9 at the funeral home.

Edward Charles Guthmann was born July 14, 1880, at Plattsmouth, to Mr. and Mrs. William Guthmann. When he was a young man, he apprenticed as a machinist in the Havelock Shops of the Burlington Railroad. After his apprenticeship, he came to Grand Island where he became a machinist in the Union Pacific Railroad Shops. Except for a short time which he was employed at Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, his work was in the Grand Island shops.

When he left the railroad, it was to found his auto - repair business, operating that business until his retirement. When the Cornhusker Ordinance Plant became operative during World War II, he was employed in the garage plant.

When he took his final retirement, he and Mrs. Guthmann maintained their home here until failing health caused them to move to Omaha.

Mr Guthmann was a member of the parish at St. Mary's Cathedral.

He and Miss Estella McDowell were married June 22, 1904, in Grand Island. Two sons were born to them. Mrs. Estella Guthmann died in January, 1907.

Mr. Guthmann and Miss Alma Bernstein were married February 10, 1909, in Grand Island. Two children were born to them.

Mr Guthmann is survived by his widow, Alma; four sons, Edward of Omaha, Robert of Council Bluffs, Paul of Laramie, Wyoming, and Joseph of Grand Island; 18 grandchildren; and 23 great grandchildren.

Four sisters, one brother, and one great grandchild preceded him in death.
