LaVone "Swede" D. Bitner, 81, of 1306 Ferry St., died June 23, 2016 at his home.
He was born February 6, 1935 in Ottumwa to Francis L. and Bernice Lagerstrom Bitner. He married Barbara J. Handling on October 24, 1954 in Ottumwa.
A 1953 graduate of Ottumwa High School, LaVone served 4 years in the U.S. Air Force as an airplane mechanic in Homestead, FL.
He worked 34 years for FAA as a quality insurance specialist, living in Cedar Rapids for 13 years and then in Excelsior Springs, MO. After retiring in 1994, he moved back to Ottumwa and drove truck for Eastlick Trucking.
He had been a member of Ottumwa Baptist Temple. He was a lifetime member of the Ottumwa Saddle Club, past president and member of Excelsior Springs Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #3917, a member of East Gate Masonic Lodge #630 A.F. & A.M. in Kansas City, MO, and a member of Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
LaVone was a caring husband and father and a good provider for his family. He enjoyed camping with family and friends.
Surviving is his wife, Barbara; his children, Terry Lynn (Kevin) Bitner-Schark and Randy Dale Bitner both of Ottumwa; a grandson, Travis Dale Schark; a great-granddaughter, Danica Lynn Schark and close friends, Don Gabel and Cliff Smith.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Mel Kendall officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Sunday with the family present from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
