Alberta Mareta (Roth) Wickam, 97, of St. Joseph, passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at The Shepherd's House.

Alberta was born on July 19, 1918 on a farm south of Highland, Kansas to Jacob and Polly (Sherer) Roth. She would help with the wheat and corn harvest as a young girl with a pony cart loaded with drinking water pulled by a horse named Billie for the crew.

She attended Highland High School until her junior year when The Great Depression got her dad, Jake's farm. They then relocated to north St. Joseph, MO, where she went to Lafayette High School, graduating in 1936.

Alberta worked at Woolworth's Dime Store as a lunch counter server where she learned how to make all kinds of soda fountain treats, which she made for her own family every day. She wanted to be a nurse but there was no money available, so she fulfilled her life by being a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She took care of the family when they were sick, nursing her grandparents, parents, in-laws, husband, Eddie and sisters to the end of their lives. In addition, she cared for every stray dog and cat that came along, passing that skill along to all of her family who continue to carry on that tradition today.

Mrs. Wickam retired as a librarian at Carnegie Branch Library in 1982, after 20 years of service. She was South Park School PTA president and treasurer, and room mother for 20 years. She also volunteered for Red Cross and was a Scout leader for both boys and girls.

Alberta married James E. (Eddie) Wickam on September 7, 1939. They were married 48 years, 4 months, 8 days when Eddie passed away on January15, 1988. This union produced a son, Jim Wickam and a daughter, Janice (Wickam) Evans.

Alberta was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Eddie; daughter, Janice Wickam-Evans; three brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include a son, Jim Wickam, Savannah, MO; main caregiver and granddaughter, Hollie Thompson (Russ Manley), St. Joseph; grandchildren, Candie Chandler (Allen), Cassville, MO; Marcie Redemer (Bob), St. Joseph; great-grandchildren, Lacie Thompson, Cristin Thompson, Lindsey Warner, Kameron Duncan, Emma Duncan, Peyton Redemer, Quinton Redemer, Sutton Redemer; great-great-grandchildren, Brooklynn Warner, Dash Duncan and Abigail Duncan, all of St. Joseph; a sister, Mayola Chapman, Hermitage, TN and her beloved dog, Chubbie and cat, Cricket.

Services 2:00 PM on Saturday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel in St. Joseph. Interment Ashland Cemetery.
