Elbert McDonald was born and reared in Birmingham, Alabama. He served with distinction as a soldier in the Confederate Army, ranking as lieutenant. He joined the Confederate Army under Joseph E. Johnson in 1861, and received a wound in the arm during the Siege of Vicksburg. He was in the famous battle of Lookout Mountain and other engagements.

He came to Texas in 1869, locating first in Hunt County. In 1872, he was married to Jo Francis Slater and eleven children were born to them. His wife, Jo died in 1897, and in 1898, he was married to Mrs. Sallie Elizabeth Sanderson Roberts and to this union four children were born, with one dying in infancy.

Elbert became a Christian and joined the Baptist church at the age of fourteen. He had been a Mason for fifty-seven years, and had been a member of the local organization, Grove Hill Lodge, for nearly fifty years. He also was a member of the Royal Arch rank of the order.

Elbert also taught school in Hunt County for a period of time.
