Robert Bolling Batte graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1928 and earned an LL.B. degree from Virginia College of Law. He was an engineer with the C & P Telephone Company and a resident of Richmond, Virginia.

Batte compiled an extensive collection of genealogical and historical research notes and files. The Robert Bolling Batte Papers are housed at the Library of Virginia and some of his genealogical material is available online through that organization's website.
