Sennett “Senate” Johnson Cutlip

January 16,1843-November 14,1917

Sennett “Senate” Johnson Cutlip, born January 16, 1843, to his parents, Lewis Cutlip (1812-1884) and Hannah (Brown) Cutlip (1815-1880), in Braxton County, WV, served during the Civil War in the Virginia Infantry from West Virginia. He enlisted as a Private on May 18, 1861 in Sutton, WV at the age of 18 in Company C, 9th Battalion Regiment Virginia. He transferred to Company C, 25th infantry Regiment Virginia on May 1, 1862. He was furloughed on February 20, 1863 at Stoney Creek, WV. He was hospitalized in several field hospitals for various ailments between 1863-1864. He was taken prisoner on May 5, 1864 at Wilderness, VA, and confined on May 9, 1864 at Belle Plain, VA. Later he was confined on May 17, 1864 at Point Lookout, MD. On August 14, 1864 he was confined at Elmira, NY. He finally took an oath of allegiance to the “winning” United States on June 27, 1865 in Elmira, NY and was released.

He married Elizabeth Hattie Jordan following the Civil War in Braxton County, WV. They were parents of six children. She was born January 30, 1847, Braxton County, WV, and died March 18, 1908 in Braxton County, WV. Sennett died November 14, 1917 at Holly River Road, Webster County, WV, at the home of his daughter, Mary Maud (Cutlip) Eagle. Cause of death was Bright’s Disease. He and his wife are buried at Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Webster County, WV.

Daughters, Virginia (Cutlip) Roby, and her husband, G.L. Roby, Emma (Cutlip) Browning, and her husband, James Browning, Mary Maud (Cutlip) Eagle, and her husband, George Marion Eagle, and Lillie (Cutlip) Sullivan, and her husband, M. M. Sullivan, son, Jesse M. Cutlip, grandson, Ofa C. Roby, survived him.
In addition to his wife, his son, Thomas J. Cutlip, predeceased him.

His original obituary was published in the Webster Republican, Webster County, WV, on November 22, 1917.
