Son of Samuel and Sarah Maria Cooper.

He attended the U.S. Military Academy and was Commissioned as Lieutenant in the U.S.A. Artillery, serving 1857-1861. Resigning his U.S. Commission, he was commissioned as Lieutenant, C.S.A. Artillery on 3/16/1861 and commended an artillery camp in Richmond in 7/1861. From 10/1863 - 6/10/1864 he was a Lieutenant serving in unspecified roles, probably as a Staff Officer, within the 2nd Corps. He was promoted to Major of Artillery, Provisional Army of Confederate States, on 7/18/1864. He was Assistant Adjutant and inspector General to General McLaws 9/16/1864 - 1/1865 (Provided by BigFrench).
