Rod was killed in a Horse Race in 1941. In 1941 Tragedy stuck on the second day of the Waikato Cup race. Six horses fell in the first race and champion jockey Rod McTavish, riding Golden Valley, was killed instantly. Early in his career Rod had been apprenticed to Dick Hannon at Cambridge. He married the daughter of Mr. L. J. Hyde, (Vera Hyde), formerly of Thames, and won the Grand National On Peter Maxwell for his father-in-law. He was a favourite with Thames patrons and his death was a shock to the racing fraternity.
