OBITUARY
Maria High Allen
Maria Allen, daughter of Charles and Christine High, was born in Kingsbury, Washington Co. N. Y., April 14, 1798; was lineally descended from German, Scotch and Irish ancestry. July 13, 1822, she was married to Samuel Allen, whom she survived fourteen years. She was the mother of seven children, four of whom were sons, still living; two daughters died in early childhood. The remaining daughter lived to womanhood, became the wife of Wm. H. Potorf, and died September 1878, at her home in Shannon, Ill. Her earlier married life was spent in the states of New York and Indiana. In 1841 she moved with her husband to their farm in the town Bloomfield, Walworth Co., Wis., where she remained happily situated until her death, which occurred June 11, 1880. she being in the eighty third year of her age, possessed of a strong , healthy constitution, an active, vigorous mind; and being actuated by a thoroughly Christian heart, she was particularly well fitted to take upon herself the arduous duties of pioneer life. One of the main characteristics of her nature was the unbounded love she bore the kindred hearts with her; there was no husband better then her own , no children better then her own children, and to them she was a wife and mother than whom none could be better. One of the main desires of her life was to see her children grow up to fill honest positions in life. That her wishes have been fully gratified. all who know them may bear witness, nor did the existence of strong mutual regard terminate with her own kindred. She recognized and respected worth wherever found, and was in return loved and respected by all worthy persons who were favored with her acquaintance. There was but little affinity between her nature and that of the sluggard.
Her three sons, Charles, George and William, with their estimable wives, stood by her bedside to fan and watch with loving kindness her expiring breath. With them, with her other children, her grandchildren, and fond sister, we mourn, yet in our mourning we are comforted, knowing that she lived long, she lived well, that her fondest hopes were realized, and that her life was in all respects worthy and complete.
