Dr. Long attended pre-med school at the University of Kentucky and was graduated from University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1927. He interned at General Hospital in Louisville and came to Elizabethtown in 1928 to practice his profession. For many years, up to his death, he maintained offices in the Long Building, owned by him, on North Mulberry Street.

He was also a member of the Kentucky State Medical Association, had served as its vice-president, and usually attended its annual meetings.
