The son of Jacob & Mary Comfort, he married Lucy Ann Wolf February 24, 1848, in Menallen Township, Adams County, and fathered Mary F. C. (b. @1849), Horace George (b. 07/??/51), Agnes Carrie (b. 12/??/56), William Seward (b. @1857), Frederick Stanton (b. @1863), Ida Catherine (b. 07/24/72), and Daisy N (b. 12/??/73). In 1860, he was a mason living in Chambersburg, Franklin County, and stood 5' 5" tall with light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Adams County October 16, 1862, as a substitute for Isaac Pottorff, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 7 as a private with Co. F, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863. He also enlisted and mustered in Chambersburg February 12, 1864, as a private with Co. B, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pa), and honorably discharged with his company July 8, 1865.
