According to the book, "A History of the Callaham and Carwile Family," by Anna Diehls Callahan, Zachariah Carwile Jr. was born in Abbeville County, SC and was a son of Revolutionary War soldier Zachariah Carwile Sr.

The book states that by 1860, he and his wife Mary "Polly" Callaham had moved to Pontotoc County, Mississippi. Zachariah Jr. is buried in an unmarked grave at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, Union, Miss.
