PEORIA– Karen M. Ringenberg, 73, of Peoria, passed away peacefully at 8:35 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at her home in Peoria surrounded by family.

Karen was born on October 18, 1942 to Dr. William C. and Inez (DePrato) McDermott in Peoria. She married Donald R. Ringenberg on August 22, 1963 in Peoria; he preceded her in death on October 31, 2005.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Patricia McDermott.

Karen is survived by her children, Theresa (David) Matthews of Cary, N.C., Michael (Ellen) Ringenberg of North Wales, Pa., and Matthew (Alyse) Ringenberg of Peoria; her grandchildren, Patrick, Mary and Peter Matthews, Daniel, Ryan, Mia, and Benedict Ringenberg, her sister, Mary (Jim) Lawless, her brother, William C. McDermott, and her sister Aileen (Dan) Spillman.

Karen attended Academy of Our Lady and graduated from Peoria Central High School in 1960. She furthered her education at Illinois Central College School of Nursing.

She volunteered as a nurse for many years at Heartland Community Health Clinic and was recognized as Volunteer of the Year in 1997. Karen was an avid reader, loved music, and developed a passion for gardening.

In addition to her family, she will be missed greatly by her pug dog, Mitzi, whose training is still a work in progress.

A memorial service will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 1, 2016 at St. Philomena Catholic Church in Peoria. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Friday, July 1, at the church. A private burial of cremated remains will take place at Brooklyn Cemetery in Brooklyn, Ill.

Cremation rites have been accorded.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, Heartland Community Health Clinic or St. Philomena Catholic Church.
