He attended country school at Wisner and then Winside. He spent his high school years at Pilger.
After graduation in 1959 he worked on the family farm for some time.
Duane moved to Omaha to work at Western Electric before enlisting in the Air Force in January of 1961.
Duane and JoAnn met in Norfolk and were married on June 4-1961 at Crawford Valley United Methodist Church after Duane finished basic training at Lackland AFB. He attended Technical School in Illinois. After graduation he was stationed in Columbus, Mississippi as an air freight specialist.
In January 1963 Duane was transferred to Ineirlik Air Force Base in Turkey and remained there until being honorably discharged in July 1964.
Upon discharge Duane returned to Mississippi and worked as a carpenter's apprentice and then for the City of Columbus as a Light Maintenance Foreman. Duane and JoAnn returned to Nebraska in late spring of 1965, Duane worked for Jenny Oldsmobile as a mechanic until March of 1967 when he became the tank wagon drive at Tri-County Co-op in Winside until 2007, when he retired after 40 years of service delivering fuel and working in the office.
