CHARLIE BURCHFIELD FAMILY
Charlie L. Burchfield, his wife, Ethel, and their small daughter, Audrey, age around 7 or 8, came to New Mexico, probably by covered wagon, arriving April 19, 1913, from near Hunter, Oklahoma. Hunter is near Enid. He filed a few miles north of Sofia, but was not allowed the full 320 acres usually obtained, as there was a creek, the Gallegoes, near or on his place, making the authorities call it land fit for irrigation. His place was just 160 acres. They lived in a tent while getting a house built. The house had a dirt floor as was sometimes the case in the early homesteaders' homes. When, sometime later, they moved into a house with a wooden floor, Ethel mopped it daily, she was so happy to have it. Eventually Charlie was allowed to file on another 160 acres, and this was a few
miles southwest of Grenville. Then he traded his first land to John R. Adetman and his wife for land near the last filing. In time he had leased enough State land to make a ranch of 1200 acres. He farmed and raised sheep and cattle through the years, though by 1942, and probably earlier, he had quit the farming part. The daughter, Audrey, went to school some at Grenville and at Marguerite, a country school southwest of Grenville, and after returning from California, she went to Grenville again, and graduated from high school there. She married Orville Clason in 1936, and they soon moved to California. Both are now deceased. Charlie, Ethel, and Audrey had all lived in California for perhaps a couple of years in the early twenties, but then returned to New Mexico. Ethel passed away in 1939. In 1942, July 27, Charlie married Grace Sechrist, who lived with her parents a few miles west of him. They ran the ranch, mostly sheep, for a few years, then moved to Clayton. Toward the last, on the ranch, they mostly took in livestock to pasture for others, instead of running their own. Both sheep and cattle were pastured this way. They did this after moving to Clayton, too, until the ranch was sold later. It was 1954 when they moved to Clayton. Charlie passed away in 1966. in 1974 Grace married Fred Lamunyon, and that is the end of the story of the Charlie Burchfields in New Mexico. By Grace Burchfleld Lamunyon
