His first wife passed away after a few years;. He then moved to Liverpool, England;then back to Schleswig briefly and then to the United States. Once in the United States he lived in St. Louis, then Kansas, then to New Mexico.

He is survived by by 2 daughters: Mrs. O. R. (Hazel) Brandon, Clayton, NM and Mrs. Moore (Irene) Nix, Dodge City, KS; and brother, Nicholas, Little Falls, MN.
