Berry Newton Alvis was born in Texas, the son of Reverend Isaac Newton Alvis and Lucy Ermine Hubbard, brother of Vestus Quentus, Clovis Leonidas, Elbert "Zack", Isaac E., and John H.; half brother of Orville Browning, Rice Gambull, James Carol, Taylor Pierson and Mary Ellen (twins), and William Wallace. Rev. Alvis was born in Hopkins County, Texas. He was minister of the First Baptist Church in Rochester, Haskell County, Texas.

Berry Alvis was a WW I Veteran.

He came to Clayton in 1925.

He was a long-time Clayton educator. He became Principal of the High School in 1934 and in 1950 Superintendent of Clayton Schools. He retired from the school system in 1960. He served as State Representative 1962-1966. The new grade school completed in 1965 was name Alvis Elementary in his honor.

He is survived by wife; 3 daughters: Sandra Libby, Tucson, AZ; Mary Lou Annunziato, Clayton, NM and Ann Alvis, Albuquerque.
