George P. Sheffer, 62, brother of former Franklin Police Chief F. Marion Sheffer, died Tuesday in Apache Junction, Ariz., where he had resided for the past five years, following a short illness. Mr. Sheffer was born at Van, August 16, 1897, a son of the late Benjamin and Ellen Sheffer. He attended public schools at the Nickleville and Franklin and also attended Clarion State Teachers College. He was United in marriage with the former Tressa Rote, who survives. Mr. Sheffer was a rural mail carrier in the Clarion area for many years. He had been engaged in the real estate business since the family moved to Arizona. He was a member of the Methodist Church. Mr. Sheffer was an ardent sportsman and wrote a syndicated column, “Trails and Creels In Western Pennsylvania,” for a number of years. He also edited and published a book, “True Tales of the Clarion River.” Surviving in addition to his wife are three children, Mrs. Eleanor Kyzer, Earl (Bud) Sheffer and Harold Sheffer, all of California; 13 grandchildren, and the following brothers and sisters, Warren and Marshall Sheffer, of Van; Mrs. Austen (Ruth) Donaldson of Nickleville; Mrs. Katherine Bergman, F. Marion Sheffer and Francis Sheffer, all of Franklin. A son, Richard, was killed in action during World War II. The body will be shipped to the Goble funeral home in Clarion where services will be held Sunday afternoon. Interment will be made in the Clarion cemetery.
