Wife of Claud D. Kelsay, SSgt US Army Air Forces

Hilda J. Kelsay, age 93 (and proud of it!) took a peaceful step from this life into God's Kingdom at 2:30 pm, April 25th, 2016. She entered this world at home in Pfaffenhofen, Germany on February 4th, 1923, the only daughter of Johann (John) Aschauer and Paulina (Paula) Johanna Santer.

In 1927, she accompanied her parents as they immigrated by ship to America. The family entered Canada, while they waited for the immigration quotas to open which would allow their entry in the US. In 1928, they entered the US through Windsor, Ontario, and settled in Detroit. Hilda, as she came to be known, adjusted well, and became a US Citizen when her parents became citizens.

She met the love of her life, Claud D. Kelsay, when he was on an auditing assignment at Woodall Industries. Theirs was a "water cooler" romance except it was over the pencil sharpener! Her comment to a co-worker at her first glimpse of Claud was, "I could really go for a guy like that". Clearly the feeling was mutual, and they married on August 21st, 1954.

Children came quickly…Paula (the honeymoon baby) in 1955, Laura ( the "oops" baby) in 1956, and Claudia (the planned baby and last attempt at a boy), in 1958.

Mom juggled babies, and the demands of a husband and her father, who lived with the family until his death in 1979. She was a superlative cook, a meticulous housekeeper, wiper of tears, arbitrator of arguments and the hub of the family wheel. She attracted stray animals like moths to a light, and our childhood was populated with pets called Trixie, Mickey, KoKo, Twiggy, Callie, Buddy, Lotte, Tinkerbell, Bunny and Mama Kitty. She was like a Pied Piper of Hamlin Town, attracting children to her warmth, kindness and patience.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Claud, and was survived by daughters Paula McFarland (Gary), Laura Wooton, and Claudia Gabriel (Michael); grandchildren Ryan Wooton (Erin), Julie Wooton, Jonathan Gabriel (Karolina) and Emily Gabriel; and great-grandchildren Brendan Wooton and Jacob Wooton.
